My work is inspired by the love my mother had for me and by the colors and traditions of Mexico. I firmly believe that art becomes even more meaningful when we have the opportunity to make it with our own hands and lots of heart.
Meet Señora Catrina Houston
Jael Rivera, known as Señora Catrina Houston on social media, is a Mexican folk artist, Catrina makeup artist, cultural educator, and registered nurse by profession. Rivera’s work celebrates the beauty and traditions of Mexican culture.
Her journey into Mexican folk art began after the loss of her mother, where she found comfort and healing through the traditions and cultural roots that connected her to her heritage. What began as a personal journey of healing became a passion for sharing that same connection with others.
Jael was a featured artist for the Houston Rockets’ Día de Muertos celebration and is a 2025 Gold Telly Award winner for the project Día de los Muertos: Catrina Artist. She is also co-founder of Aqua Catrina, an immersive underwater artistic experience in Tulum, Mexico.
Through Señora Catrina Houston, Jael creates Catrina makeup, cultural appearances, and workshops that invite people to learn, celebrate, and connect with Mexican traditions. Her mission is to keep these beautiful traditions alive and to share the sense of identity, comfort, and pride they have brought into her own life.
